For the record, I’ve seen episodes of Glee and Grey’s. I’ve heard tunes by the Beatles. I’ve seen the first Star Wars. I just have not been particularly moved by any of the aforementioned.

You know when people overhype something until there is no way it can live up to the exceedingly high expectations set forth? That’s what happened for the things I listed. Oddly, I’m pretty sure I do the same thing with the Office, Seinfeld, and Curb. IMO they are the funniest shows ever. And I may have ruined them (by overhyping) for those who have never seen them. I think Garbage and Kaskade are, respectively, the greatest band and DJ of all time. I champion them all the time. My apologies.

How much of something (music, movies, food, etc.) must one digest before it can be objectively decided that you actually dislike it?

“I held down the sleep button until Voice Control came up,” recalled Longwood.  ”I gave it an earful.  I told it I knew about it sneaking around when I was sleep.  It was so callous and indifferent, like I never owned it.  Using phrases I’d never heard.  What the hell does TTYL mean?”

Longwood cited several instances in which he would open Safari and the browser would be on pages he was certain he’d never been to.  ”Once it was opened to a web page with random Etch-A-Sketch pictures.  I just don’t look at crap like that.”  When asked why he thought the phone with an A4 processor strayed, Longwood speculated “I’ve been busy with work.  I hardly get on the App Store and buy anything for it.  I feel like I’m throwing money away unless I get free apps.”

Longwood said he gave the the state of the art device an opportunity to speak.  ”It said I had only used 300 of my 1000 monthly minutes.  That I hadn’t even though about using 28 of its 32 gigabytes.”  Longwood said he asked who the other person was.  ”On its gorgeous retina display, it said ‘IDK’.  So, I’m assuming some wise ass teenager.”

With the device in hand, Longwood scrolled to the last page and pointed to an icon.  ”I don’t know how that got there.  I can’t delete it.  What the hell is Cydia?”  After explaining to him that his phone had been jailbroken, Longwood looked distraught.  ”I’d heard about these kind of phones needing to feel more validated.  I just thought it was a rumor.”

Shortly after he uttered those words, his phone sent him a message that said: “For crying out loud, give me a damn passcode.  You haven’t upated me in months.  I’ve been syncing with the kid down the street.”  It was referring to Shannon Atkins, who lived four houses down.

“Me and her dad are friends.  Both of them were over here day I got the phone.  She was all googly-eyed.”

“I’d never had a cool phone before,” Longwood answered, when asked why he bothered to get such a high maintenance phone.  Failing to press the power button that puts the phone to sleep, Longwood accidentally entered the Maps application.  The addresses of at least ten other people were saved.

“Wow,” sighed Longwood.  ”Just wow….”

The realization that you won’t live forever, makes you want to do things.  Fun things.  We are all afraid of something.  I’m not talking things like spiders, snakes, frogs, etc….  I mean things that prevent us from advancing in life.  Stuff like fear of failure/rejection, commitment, the unknown, etc….  Fortunately, I have a buddy (Alexis) that helps me along with my fears.  When I was younger, I hated severe storms until I realized I wasn’t the only person experiencing bad weather.  Misery loves company.  Fear hates it.

If you are not in the know, Ole Miss hasn’t had a mascot in the past few years because the Colonel is deemed “racist” by those affiliated with the University.  Strangely, I think those that think this are a minority who possess a majority of the power.  As the school is trying to shed its racist past, they look to change the mascot.  Here’s my take.

You can’t shed your past.  You can only choose a different path for the future.  Changing the mascot  neither a good idea nor bad idea.  Since we live in the PC era, almost everything could be off limits.  We’d surely have to have an animal as a mascot.  Almost any human mascot could be traced back to some sort of negativity.  After all, a good bit of America’s roots are tied into slavery or mistreatment of a group of people, i.e, Native Americans, Blacks, Hispanics, etc….  We had a war about it.

The trouble is finding a suitable mascot.  What else fits?  Would we change our name from the Rebels to something else?  To my knowledge, no D-1 school has changed mascots, other than those that may have had offensive Native American depictions.

But, the colonel isn’t racist.  People are.  Racist people can turn anything racist.  For instance, no one boycotts Colonel Sanders.  He is almost the spitting image of Colonel Reb.  Place a similar looking guy as the face of a southern university that did not allow blacks and look what happens.  The issue the people have is that good ole Colonel Reb reflects the old South.  In these times, that is ridiculous.  The South cannot and will not rise again.  We have a black President in a majority white nation.  If that can happen, surely we can let the Colonel continue to be our mascot.
